Need Help

Though it is Sunday, I need some help. I am taking out my first ad in our local weekly paper, Creative Loafing. It's urban, edgy, and widely read. The reactions to my choices here have been strong and opposite so I am searching for more help. So here are my choices for my ad. The first is straight up, the other is... not. So which one should I run? Be frank. I have to decide tomorrow morning.

i say the one with john in the apron since THAT one will immediately grab peoples attention! kinda like karen ehart's line of ads for her torso with the models obviously nude - at least from the waste up ;)

#2, probably also pump up the pitch just a bit more (you know..."Hot date," "Sizzling hot!" "Want a hot date?", that kind of thing)

I'd have liked it a little better if the guy in the apron had been in the hotshop, holding a glass of wine, but you've still got a good shot.

The first one is good, too--and I'd consider something along that line if the audience is a bit stodgier. The big deal with the second, though, is it just has a stronger graphic line to begin with--the contrast pushes the image out to the viewer from a longer distance and is liable to attract people for a closer look. In the first, the lines and tones are very similar, and needs to be viewed more intimately, i.e., from closer up.

Probably more important, though...I know you need to strongly brand your shop, but the real pitch here is the date night announcement. It probably should be on top where your logo is right now, as big as you can get it. Get the reader hooked on the what, and he'll go find the who. Much harder to start with the who and hope he reads down the ad to find the what.

just a suggestion, anyway...

Not being urban or edgy, I'd have to go with the furnace guy.

The semi-nudie on the first ad, following ones something that shows the couple, more like the one you posted on the 27th. Or get their permission to use that photo. It tells everything. Then one showing a couple blowing (glass) for a subsequent ad.

With the text the way it stands, I would choose to run the first one. I think the text would need to be a little edgier/funnier to compliment the second picture. (How HOT was your last date? or, For a hot date in excess of 1400 degrees come to Siyeh Glass studios! LOL)

It's funny you posted this today as I was struggling with crafting a last min print ad too this morning. Couldn't pass up the deal they gave me for a 1/2 page ad in the Buyer's Guide and had to unexpectedly shift from production hat to graphic designer hat. But I'm happy with the results - I think it's my best ad yet! It'll be interesting to see what response I get with it.

Good luck with your ad!

Regarding my previous comment, remember that I do live in a gay resort area. Not sure how this translates to Atlanta. I saw using the nudie as a way to get attention to the ad, with the next ad in the same format, but some nice hetero couple. Then some nice gay couple. Whatever. Grab the attention as long as it works in your demographic.

Problem with the glassblowing picture is twofold: too busy and not showing a couple. Nice is that it shows the wine, cheese, grapes and glassblowing. But, where's the chick? Show the romance. And keep it simple. Like the second shot.

Yeah, me again. If the paper is edgy, go with the nudie for this time. Then shoot some couples doing something edgy for another ad.

The first photo is too busy, the second seems a bit too obvious.

Glass IS cool and edgy, the first one will attract folks that will be attracted to your facility and this cool offering. The wine and cheese in the foreground are nicely imaged and romantic, the second ad will scare people off. If in doubt go with out!
